The follow-up to the popular Gundam Seed (2002-2003), Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny (2004-2005) takes place two years later, in 73, Cosmic Era. The hero of the Destiny is Shin Asuka, whose family was killed during the previous war: he pilots the latest and most complex Gundam, which assembles itself in midair, like Gekigangar III in Nadesico. Shin has to fight three raiders who steal new-model Gundams during the visit of Princess Cagalli Athha of Orb to ZAFT Chairman Durandal. Athrun Zala, the hero of Gundam Seed, has given up combat duty to serve as an aid to Athha, but by the end of episode 5, he's back in the cockpit where he belongs. The conflict between the Naturals and the genetically enhanced Coordinators remains the underlying cause of the military and political struggles. The raid on the ZAFT base gets Gundam Seed Destiny off to a roaring start, and director Mitsuo Fukuda choreographs the land and space mecha battles with impressive skill.
