Perfect set, no problems at all! April 20, 2008 Brandon Nesky 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Well, after ordering this set, and then reading about the disc 1 errors, I was a little hesitant in my purchase. The moment this came in, I put in disc 1 and played through episodes 3-5. I have had no issue and everything plays great.
To complete this set, order the Complete Collections II and Endless Waltz. This was on of my favorite shows years ago, and I'm glad I can own it for a fraction of the cost compared to the original box set. The entire series cost me $40.
Quintessential Anime Series... Rated: Buy It Now! April 20, 2007 Michael Gmirkin (Beaverton, Oregon, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Regardless of what you think of the usual "mecha" tropes of "pretty boys" in nigh "invincible machines" spouting off about "we shouldn't have to fight" while simultaneously mowing down mechas and their human inhabitants in an orgy of killing (okay, this is a less-bloody anime than most I've seen, since it's usually mechas we see being damaged or blown up, rather than humans, though there may be a bit of that here and there too)...
Gundam Wing was a rather good series. It was well animated (granted there might have been a few re-used space battle frames/scenes; considering the length of the series, that's almost inevitable), I recall it had good voice acting, and a great story arc (despite the occasional plot twist and turn and alliances forming, breaking, re-forming, switching sides, or whatnot). And, in some regards, it also helped bring anime to the American audience by making it more accessible to the younger audience, and to the American audience in general. I say that because, often animes tend to deal with real esoterica, which can be off-putting to the casual viewer. Soem anime fans may dislike this series for the same reasons. In some ways, it's a lazy man's anime, or a kids' anime 'cause there aren't these uber-esoteric themes to deal with. But that's part of what I consider to be good about it. It can be watched and enjoyed by pretty much anyone who enjoys "mecha" and/or "fighting" animes. But it has a certain depth to the story that takes it slightly beyond just the simple "fight" or "fight-in-space" genre. I'm not saying it's the deepest or most cinematic thing ever. But it has character development. You can identify with the characters, the plot lines are pretty clear, if occasionally it takes turns that weren't expected.
In all, it's a good series, and I recommend it to anyone who likes good entry level anime in the "space opera," "mecha" and/or "fighting" genres (with the usual "pretty boy" cast; that's pretty much a given, I could care less one way or the other, actually it might be nice to see a show that DOESN'T use "pretty boys" sometime).
Long story short, I recommend this one for novices, or those who like mechas and want to see some pretty good mecha action. Havent' watched the original "gundam" series, so I'm not biased toward or against them. So I speak only for this series itself. I've watched it, and I liked it. It stood on its own, and shouldn't necessarily be compared to other "Gundam" shows, or disparaged because it follows an "alternate timeline."
If you like Gundam Wing, you may also like G Gundam 1 & 2, Gundam 0080, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam 08th MS Team
----------
Addendum, having just completed a several day marathon with the first half of the Anime Legends complete collection, I can say that it's all I recall it being. If you like the giant-robot genre and/or the drama/shifting alliances genre, or the "pretty boys kicking butt" genre, you'll probably like this series. There are a few more repeated scenes (mostly in space battles) than I remember, but they're used in ways that unless you're really LOOKING FOR THEM, you probably wouldn't notice. So, I probably shouldn't have said anything lest it taint the viewing experience.
So, yeah, I am quite happy with the quality. Strangely enough, one of the things I don't like is that the trailers included seems to revolve around the same set of like 10 anime titles (had hoped to maybe hear about names I haven't already heard of repeatedly). I was hoping to broaden my horizons slightly. Most people probably won't notice or care about this lack of trailer diversity, tho'.
Must buy January 16, 2007 Vince M. Stanley (USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
this is one of those anime that go into legends as great master peaces. I recommend buying the complete collection 2 so you have it all.
My Number One Anime Series... November 25, 2006 Azn Boy (New York) Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing was the third Anime series I have ever watched (Sailor Moon the first and DragonBall Z the second) and one of a few that I would still return to now that I have grown up and lost interest in other or new Anime. I was only nine-years-old when I started watching Gundam Wing and... wow... did I love it. I remember coming home from school and tuning in to Gundam Wing, at 5:30 P.M., at channel sixty-seven, on Cartoon Network, on Toonami. Now that I am sixteen-years-old, I do not watch cartoons nor Anime. I do not plan to buy Sailor Moon nor DragonBall Z on DVD. I do not even bother watching Cartoon Network (now my favorite channel is HBO). My point is that Gundam Wing stands out as one of the best Anime series of all time and older people or people who do not even watch Anime can still love it. I am still in love with it: the story, the characters, and of course, the mobile suits (Wing Zero being my favorite). In my opinion, these are the best designed mobile suits ever created for a Gundam series. I look at the mobile suits of the other Gundam series and not one appeals to me... not even Gundam Seed. Now, after nearly 7 years, I am still here and am still in love with Gundam Wing.
For a great price, others can return to Gundam Wing instead of buying "The Complete Operations" box set, which is highly expensive and that was the one I almost bought thinking that was better, but it is not. I had bought Endless Waltz to find a way to watch the story because "The Complete Operations" was just too expensive. This Anime Legends: Collection #1 DVD of Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing contains the first twenty-five episodes spread across five discs. I have not watched the series for over four years and this DVD (along with Collection #2) helped me relive the experience. The day I received this, I went straight ahead and watched the first eighteen episodes in six hours. Before watching, I had told myself to savor it and watch only three episodes a day so that it would take me almost seventeen days to watch the whole series. Within those six hours, I could not stop myself and told myself repeatedly "one more episode" during the fourth, fifth, seventh (definitely could not stop there), tenth (great episode), twelfth, thirteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth, and finally I stopped at the eighteenth episode. This proves that this series is addicting.
A word for everyone: Get this Anime Legends: Collection #1, the Collection #2, and also the movie, Endless Waltz, of Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing instead of the individual "operations" or "The Complete Operations". Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing is the best Gundam series and one of the best Anime series out there.
